Literacy
Resources selected to support our Literacy initiatives are based on Structured Literacy approaches, which is supported by the Science of Reading. In Grades K-5, teachers have been provided a program titled Amplify CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts). Amplify CKLA "combines rich, diverse content knowledge in history, science, literature, and the arts with systematic, research-based foundational skills instruction." For further information and research on Amplify CKLA, please click HERE. In Grades 6-8, teachers have been provided a program titled Amplify ELA. Amplify ELA is a "blended English Language Arts curriculum designed to prepare students for high school. Students learn to tackle any complex text and make observations, grapple with interesting ideas, and find relevance for themselves." For more information on Amplify ELA, please click HERE.
Writing Across the CurriculumWriting across the curriculum continues to be a focus beginning in Kindergarten to 12th Grade. Integrating writing across ALL subject areas has several benefits, including (1) Improved Comprehension/Understanding, (2) enhanced communication skills, (3) critical thinking development, (4) interdisciplinary learning, (5) increased engagement.InterventionThe master schedule at both MEC and CE Cole Intermediate School offer a 30 minute intervention block for each grade level. The intervention block titled WIN (What I Need) is grouped based on each individual student's greatest skill deficit or enrichment. Groups are based on the Dibels 8 benchmark and progress monitoring assessment. Reading Specialists are also available at both MJHS and MHS to continue to work with student's on their individual needs based on deficits they may be experiencing in literacy.
